johnloguk > 28.4.09 - Somewhere, over the...............

How many times have you posted a boring Daily, and then something like this happened later? Well it happened to me yesterday. I was driving to play my mate Ian at squash last night when the storm clouds started to break up. Out of the corner of my eye I saw this huge rainbow, a full arch, but I was driving down a tree lined road with nowhere to stop for a photo. Then I spotted my chance, a quick u-turn in the road and dived into the car park of a Mormon church. The sun was so low, and the arch so high, that there was no way to get all of the rainbow in shot, but through a gap in the trees I had this view. The light was incredible, the trees looked more like October than April. I fired off a few shots, but it was still raining heavily and the rainbow didn't last long. When I emerged from squash an hour later there were the remnants of an incredible sunset, but sunsets are a lot more common than this view so I didn't mind missing it :)
johnloguk > 7.12.08 - Fire and Ice

I love sunsets over water, but sunsets over icy water are even more spectacular, and what an end to the weekend this was! I had hoped to find some snow today, but there was none to be had, so I went for a run in the frosty sunshine this morning, then a leisurely walk in some more frosty sunshine this afternoon. I know Hartsholme Park and Swanholme Lakes like the back of my hand, but I never tire of walking there in the changing seasons. I've made a small gallery of my walk that you might like to visit the next time you need to de-stress yourself, it is here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6766734_Cnaj4#P-1-20

Thanks for all the kind words on my Christmas Market photo yesterday, it has been a wonderful weekend all round for me and I feel thoroughly re-charged for the week ahead. I hope your weekends have all been good, as things are only going to get more frantic over the next couple of weeks :)
johnloguk > 9.11.09 - Fog Lights

Today has been a beautiful one, fantastic weather, nice sunset, but the fog tonight was an extra surprise. When I came off the squash court at about 9.30pm I was hardly dressed for photography in near freezing fog, but I've been waiting too long for some fog to waste this opportunity. So instead of going home for a hot shower I drove straight to the Cathedral Quarter looking for photo opps! Needless to say I was the only person in shorts!!

I got a few good shots of the fog and the golden glow from the Cathedral floodlights, but this one was a real stroke of luck. This is one of my favourite shooting positions, but for 10 minutes I froze waiting for someone to come along and be a "ghost" for me. So I wandered around for a while, and was on my way back to the car when I spotted these two guys heading for my spot. I raced ahead of them (you see the shorts were useful!) and fired 3 quick shots as they approached. One was out of focus, one had lousy comp, but this one turned out OK I think. Straight out of camera, not even a crop, just a touch of in camera sharpening and low light noise reduction. This is a beautiful spot, but when the fog descends it becomes utterly surreal. I'm one photog hoping for more fog this winter :)

Thanks for the great response to my model railway shots, you guys blow me away!
johnloguk > 2.3.09 - The Original Newark :)

This is for Bill Pador and all the other members of the Dailies who live near "Nork Noo Joyzee". I had a lot of fun yesterday with an afternoon shoot around Newark, Nottinghamshire, revisiting old haunts and finding a few new ones. I'm still wading through the 300+ pics that I took, but hopefully they'll be in a gallery before too long, and I'll link from here.

In the meantime, apologies again for being AWOL from commenting, I promise to try and catch up when I get chance.

OK the Newark gallery is now up, please feel free to take a leisurely stroll round this pretty little town;

johnloguk > 8.7.08 - Busy Bee.

This is another Daily that came about completely by accident. I was driving to meet the kids from school and had a few minutes to spare, so took a little detour to take some photos of some large round hay bales that I'd seen a few days ago. I took a few of them, and a couple can be found here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4518270_XDZuH#328255423_sfE8d

Then I noticed a strip of wildflowers along the edge of a field of oilseed rape, right under my nose. I took a few of those too, which can be found here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4328734_9ZqLR#328266774_5HCEd

Then this evening there was a bit of a sunset, and a couple of shots can be found here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#328260277_Ybmiv

So it was a difficult choice, but I was so pleased at how sharp this little chap came out that he had to be my Daily for today, phew :)

PS. and I still haven't got a proper macro lens, this was hand held with my trusty Nikkor 55-200mm, and it was windy.
johnloguk > 22.3.09 - Comfort Zone

When I joined the Dailies just over a year ago one of my stated goals was to "get out of my landscape comfort zone". There have been times when I've retreated deeply into my comfort zone, but this weekend hasn't been one of them. I've been working as a stills photographer on this project http://www.theladyofshalott.co.uk/index.html and today was the last big film shoot. My main role was to take individual shots of the actors for their portfolios, but I also took a lot of candids and general shots to record the event.

All will be revealed in late May when the film is launched, but until then the imagery and style of the film is being closely managed. I can honestly say that I've never worked with such a wonderful bunch of talented individuals, and the whole experience has been magical. Unfortunately, I now have to process so many photos that I'll be AWOL from the Dailies again for another day or so. I know you'll be patient with me, and I hope this photo will maintain your interest until I can reveal a bit more :)
johnloguk > 05.02.10 - Eclipse

We had a big orange hazy sunset this evening. I was trying to avoid my usual big sky type of sunset photo, so I put the long lens on and had a play around with silhouettes. This one took my fancy :)

There is a slightly different version here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/INSPIRATION/10329875_Lpojy#781730475_NvGeX
johnloguk > 28.7.09 - Trouble Brewing
johnloguk > 6.12.08 - Getting in the Christmas Spirit

I went up to the Christmas Market again this evening. I was dreading the Saturday crowds, but I fancied a longer look round than I got on Thursday and needed a lot more photos for my gallery http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6738542_jSM8e#431506672_8mWnT In the end it was great. I found the Medieval Market in the Old Bishops Palace, which was brilliant, and had some great roast chestnuts from this stall in the shadow of the Castle. The temperature was hovering around freezing, but some hot chestnuts washed down with mulled wine was just the job. A venison burger and pint of "Rosey Nosey" Christmas beer also helped :)

I'm hoping that the car will take me off and find some snow tomorrow, but we'll have to see about that!
