johnloguk > 2.3.08 - Golden Years. Some photos are moments of inspiration, pieces of technical brilliance or snatched opportunities. This one had been meticulously planned for sometime. I have been working out the best vantage points and sunset times eversince I moved to my current home last summer. Mid-afternoon today it was very grey and trying to rain, then suddenly it all blew through and the air cleared. Sensing a nice sunset I grabbed my gear and walked a few minutes to a local hill crest and waited as this golden lightshow developed. It took much longer to select the DP than I spent taking photos, and I will upload other contenders to my Lincoln Sunset Gallery later this evening (see here http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#260994902 ). I hope you like this shot as much as I do, and I am so glad that I live so close to this view!
johnloguk > 18.2.08 - Today has been another beautiful day. Hard frost to start, not a cloud in the sky all day, that low mist that characterises clear winter days, and a stunning sunset to finish things off. I often go for a run around sunset, my favourite time of day, and although carrying a camera tends to break up the run it is often worth it. Today was more photos than running, and I might even have a whole gallery for the rest of the shots (here it is http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4363156_BFbUq#256100460 ). But here is today's offering, another take on "fire and ice", reflected sun and reeds in the icy river.
johnloguk > 4.8.08 - Ripples I had intended to do another SP today, I thought it was about time, otherwise I'd start getting bullied again (you know who you are MB!). But it has been a very hectic day, I'll try to summarise it without boring anyone :) I had barely finished my breakfast when I got a phone call, total change of plans for today. Apart from a few minutes over a late lunch, when I actually managed to get home, I've been on the move all day. I finally got back at 9pm, with a stack of emails to answer and more phone messages. Most of these mean more changes of plan for tomorrow, and more work, but one was good news, really good news. I have won my first photographic competition, hooray, and this is the image that won. I took it nearly a year ago, as one of a series, and it has remained one of my favourites. I would do certain things differently if I got the chance, but throwing a pebble into a lake to generate your own ripples is a neat trick, if you get your aim and the timing right :) Unfortunately I have a pile of paperwork to do before the morning, so I can't promise that I'll be able to catch up with the Dailies, but I'll try later. But for now I'm going to have a beer, if I can drink it with this big daft grin on my face :))
johnloguk > 1.8.08 - Absent Friends I seem to having lots of anniversaries at the moment. Yesterday I completed my first 6 months in the Dailies, and tomorrow I will have been in my new flat for a year. Today would have been my 27th wedding anniversary, but for the fact that my first wife Gill died of a brain haemorrhage on July 20th 1986. This photo was taken in January 1985, at the end of a wonderful day walking in the Derbyshire Hills. The original was a colour transparency, and is in another gallery, but this has been cropped and tidied up a bit for the Dailies. Gill and I shared a love of wild places, especially mountains, but as a cash strapped young couple we never got beyond the UK. This was good in that it allowed our daft black lab "Kelly" to go everywhere with us, we were quite a team. We had great plans, but they were all for a future that never happened for us. After Gill died my attitude to life changed considerably, never put off 'til tomorrow what you can do today, you never know what might happen. Much has happened in the intervening years, some bad, but most good. One of the best experiences of recent years has been joining the Dailies and making many great new friends, albeit at the other end of fibre optic cables halfway round the world. You guys have taught me so much, about myself as well as about photography, and long may it continue :)
johnloguk > 9.2.09 - Snow and Rain We woke up to fresh snow again this morning, and although it was cold it was quite a pleasant day. That is, until I decided to go out and get a Daily. I had hoped to take some night snow shots around the Cathedral, but it was raining heavily! The last time I took some photos here I got a ghostly biker zooming through the shot, tonight it was a bedraggled walker. Apart from a crop to get rid of boring foreground this is straight out of camera. Despite me standing over it with an umbrella some rain managed to get on the lens, but I think it adds to the watery scene (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it). johnloguk > 30.11.08 - Peace and Contemplation This image was left over from a couple of days ago when I did the misty collage. I always felt that I could do something else with this, and in the end this is just a sepia photo filter, but it conveys the feelings I wanted to get across, so I'm really happy with it. At the time I sloppily let the back of my car intrude into the photo, so that was cloned out. But otherwise it is just a B&W conversion, an adjustment of contrast and the sepia filter. I love these misty days with the sun trying to break through, and the stark silhouettes of the trees, mind you, it was bloody cold :) There is an alternative treatment here which emphasises the cold a bit more; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4328734_9ZqLR#427338235_SzU46 For those of you that asked about my curry night, it was a lot of fun. I love cooking, especially Indian food, and this was a chance to show off a bit with friends. They brought liquid refreshment, I did the food, and we all got totally stuffed! I'm now eating the leftovers, which are even tastier than last night :)
johnloguk > 25.11.08 - Men at Work! I would like to say that this shot was meticulously planned, but of course I was just incredibly lucky :) Around sunset I happened to be working near a footpath that runs between some sports fields. I thought that I might get a relatively clear view towards the Cathedral, so set off with the camera. I came to a nice gap in some trees and was looking at what I thought was a large weather vane, then it moved! Then the other guy appeared and I realised what I was looking at. The men working on the chimney are about 200metres away, the Cathedral is about 1km away. 5 metres either side and the guys were invisible, so very very lucky. I am so chuffed with this image, and tomorrow I'm going to see if I can find the workmen and show them this photo. There might be a sale in it :) PS. I've just noticed that this is my 300th Daily :)
johnloguk > 9.3.09 - Seasons Thanks for all the kind words yesterday, I don't think I've got the flu, otherwise I'd be in bed, but I've definitely got a bug of some sort. Thanks for the comments about the stamp I was making in my SP Daily yesterday too, so I thought I'd share the full set with you today. Have a great day :)
johnloguk > 2.11.08 - November You don't hear many nice things said about November (unless you live in Oz), grey, wet and windy are the sort of words usually associated with this time of year. September and October are associated with beautiful Autumn colour. December has Christmas, and January and February are often bright and frosty. But November? Nah, best to stay indoors! But then again, you never know what you might miss. Yesterday was everything you associate with November, it was a horrible day. But mid-afternoon I decided to go for a walk and get my Daily. The last time I visited Riseholme Hall it was a blustery summer's day of big clouds and blue skies, but yesterday was wet and nasty. Until I started to really look around me. Despite the mist and rain the colours were rich. The reflections in the lake were beautiful, and it is a very photogenic place to go for a walk anyway. I took nearly 100 photos in less than an hour of ducking and diving between trees in the rain, and was looking forward to processing them. But then my troubles started, Elements just refused to save anything! I started to think that it would never work, but this morning everything is working again, weird! I hate to be a slave to PP, but I really was lost without it last night. I'm rarely totally satisfied with images straight from the camera, and always like to tweak things slightly, even if it is only a small crop. Having said that, the D50 copes very well with these light conditions and most that was needed was an unsharp mask to deal with the mist. Today is bright and sunny, so if I get chance I'd like to get out to Riseholme again and take some shots in very different conditions. Then I'll upload them all into a new gallery which should be really nice. These could be the last shots of Autumn before all the leaves are gone, but I'm glad I dragged my carcass out into the rain yesterday, it was much nicer than I thought it was going to be. Don't underestimate November :)
