It's been a while since I did a night shot, and this wasn't planned, but the opportunity just presented itself nicely. Last night I won a case of bubbly, which was great, but nothing compared to the news I got earlier this evening. I've just won a Sat Nav for the car! There is a certain irony in this because I usually don't like Sat Navs or GPS systems. My view is that everyone should learn to read maps, and that all this technology makes people lazy. But am I going to refuse my prize? Not bloody likely :) Anyway, I went for a walk after I got the news, despite the drizzle, and got this nice photo.
johnloguk > 15.3.09 - Rock and Roll I spent today at a place called Stanage Edge, a real Mecca for rock climbers. I took hundreds of shots and I'm not half-way through processing them yet, but I thought I'd better get a Daily posted before midnight our time. I think I might have made it by a minute :) I like adding this zoom effect to make vertigo sufferers suffer even more, it was a really great shoot, I've missed getting my hands on some steep rock, it was like stepping back in time, a fantastic day. I hope to get the gallery up some time tomorrow. johnloguk > 17.6.09 - Caught in the spotlight This is another shot from Tuesday night, but I was still working on it last night. The guy was walking his dog, and I suddenly realised that he was going to go through the glare from the floodlights. I was disappointed with the original, because I didn't have chance to set it up properly and there was some camera shake. I decided to go with an artistic feel rather than a natural one and I hope this works. I used the watercolour filter in Elements on top of a B&W conversion and a simple frame. Thanks for the wonderful comments on yesterday's Cathedral shot, it is one of my favourite views and I never tire of it. This was taken at the opposite end of the Cathedral, where the lawns and trees create a very different atmosphere.
johnloguk > 16.6.09 - "Because the Night" It's been a while since I did any night photography, it isn't that easy when it doesn't get dark until about 11pm. I took lots around dusk, which I normally prefer to total darkness, but in the cold light of the morning this is the one I prefer. It is an iconic view, one I've done before many times, but no two shots are exactly the same after all. I'll post some of the others as I get chance. Have a great day!
johnloguk > 7.11.09 - Lamplight Thank-you for the wonderful response to my ghostly collage yesterday, I hope it encourages a few people to try something similar for the first time. The original version of this image was taken at the same time, but I thought it would look better with a "ghost" walking up the steps. Last night I went back and took a few shots with me in them, but they didn't quite look how I wanted, something was missing. I eventually worked out that what was missing was the rain on the flagstones, giving a nice sheen in the lamplight. So I decided to re-work this image as B&W, and added a dark vignette to give a more claustrophobic atmosphere.
johnloguk > 4.4.09 - Old View, New Growth OK I've used this view before, but it was such beautiful morning today with brand new growth on the willow tree and bright Spring colours..
johnloguk > 24.12.09 - Christmas Eve Fog was the order of the day today. We've had a slight thaw, but tonight it is back below freezing again. I had a wonderful photo walk round the Cathedral this evening. The combination of fog, floodlights and the golden limestone was magical as always. This will be a very familiar view to most of you by now, but each time I stand here I see something different. By the morning I'll have a whole gallery up so you can share tonight's walk with me.
johnloguk > 18.5.09 - Secret View This is another shot from my rainy photo walk yesterday afternoon, but I like it so much I just had to share it on the Dailies. I was walking along a very muddy riverbank taking photos of the old industrial buildings on the other side of the river, when I turned round and saw the Cathedral framed between the trees up on the hill. I liked the framing, but I also liked the rich colours as though the rain had washed everything bright and clean. johnloguk > 10.3.09 - Light at the end of the tunnel Thanks for all the kind words and get well wishes about my "flu bug", I'm feeling much better today, a bit washed out but definitely better than I was. I took a few shots in town this afternoon, and this one seems appropriate for my Daily today. I was blown away by the response to my Seasons Stamps yesterday, you are too kind. That started out as a bit of fun to distract my brain from the shivers and shakes I was going through over the weekend, and it is now one of my all time most popular images. Several people asked how I did it, and as usual I used one of the templates in Elements 5.0. I keep being tempted to upgrade my software, but there is so much in humble Elements that I've still not discovered. The blurred edges in this image are also from the photo layouts and themes in Elements. The B&W conversion included increased contrast to give it extra punch.
