johnloguk > 20.4.09 - The Summer Starts Here

After a particularly manic, but generally successful day, I went for an early evening wind down walk round Lincoln West Common. The light was stunning, a sort of golden haze, the breeze was warm and soft. I spent most of my childhood playing on this ancient field. Once the evenings started to get warmer and lighter, all the kids would finish their homework and flood out onto the Common for games of football. We would stay out until it was too dark to see the ball, or until our Mothers came looking for us. Tonight was one of those evenings.

But these days I'm older, and there isn't anyone to come and drag me back home. But I am now allowed in pubs, now so that's how I finished the evening, watching the sunset with a pint of porter in the shadow of Lincoln Castle. Bring on Tuesday :)

johnloguk > 18.11.08 - Beautiful November

Who said that November was a miserable wet grey month? Oh yes, it was me :)

Today has been magical, the light was as good as any day I can remember, ever. Low angled, pure, sharp, clean, fresh, you get the picture? These images were taken while I was having lunch in a small park near home. I couldn't decide which to use as my Daily, so did this collage instead. But, none of these is my favourite shot from the session, that one is here, enjoy; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053630_nJYqk#419940234_zSKqS

It sounds corny, but I'm still buzzing from this session, I am so happy with these images, I wish they all came this easily. Photography is such a powerful medium.

I've just posted a new version, with added text, to here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4328734_9ZqLR#419966938_fYrD4
johnloguk > 4.11.08 - Magic?

This image is a strange combination of my last three Dailies. Taken at dusk, traffic light streaks, Autumn colours and mist. I love experimenting with long exposures, you never know quite what you're going to get, but you often get something magical. Apart from the obvious effects on movement you tend to get lovely rich colours. This is pretty much straight out of the camera.

Mind you, I nearly got a lot more than I bargained for! Sadly, this bridge is a popular suicide spot as well as being a great viewpoint. I've taken many photos from here, and so has every local photographer that I know. But today a passing motorist spotted this guy on the bridge and phoned the Police because he thought the guy was a "jumper". One Police car appeared below, stopped the traffic and asked if I was OK, while a Police van stopped alongside me and suddenly I had the undivided attention of four Police Officers! Luckily they quickly realised that I was only taking photos and we had a laugh about it, but it does make you think!!!

Here is an alternative view from the bridge that was a close contender today; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053630_nJYqk#410154110_DiLxk
johnloguk > 23.9.09 - "The Ridge of Death" :)

OK OK, so it isn't really called that, but Steve (in the pic) christened it that when I first showed him videos of where I was going to take him. It is actually called "Crib Goch", and it is the first part of the famous Snowdon Horseshoe walk/scramble in North Wales. The cloud didn't help the photos, but it hid the big drops on either side, which was a good thing according to Steve!

Hopefully tomorrow I'll catch up with my Dailies and get the other photos posted from the trip.
johnloguk > 17.3.09 - Cheers!

Well it had to be done didn't it. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all, and Happy Birthday to me. The beer is Outlaw Brewery's Irish Dry Stout, and a fine pint it is too. Dark chocolate, coffee and bitter malts in a glass. Thanks for all the Birthday wishes and cards, real and virtual, I love you guys (and gals). Oh, before I forget, you do know that St. Patrick was an Englishman doncha ;)
johnloguk > 27.2.09 - It's a Collage Jim, but not as we know it :)

This is a cheat today I'm afraid. Friday is always a bad day for me posting on the Dailies, so here is one I prepared earlier. This is the Red Arrows, the RAF aerobatic display team, and they are based less than 5 miles from me at Scampton, home of "The Dambusters" and all that. I've loved these guys since I was a kid, dreaming of being able to fly and going to Air Shows. These shots are all of them practicing, some days I can even see them out of my windows at home, who needs to pay big money to go to an airshow when you can watch for free :)

If you want to see a full display there is a wonderful video here on Youtube of a show they did over New York harbour last Summer. It is 23 minutes long, but there is a bit at 11.30 where they do a move that will make you gasp., enjoy!

Some of you have asked how to make these collages. There is no great skill, I just use a photo layout in Elements, all I do is drag the photos into place.
johnloguk > 14.1.09 - High on Grass :)

Who needs illegal drugs when you have light like this! OK, the saga of the missing book. I eventually found it this morning, under a balloon, just don't ask! I also found £11.20 in the car while I was searching, so a double success. It also instantly relieved my stress levels which were stratospheric last night. Apologies for going AWOL from the Dailies, but I had other things on my mind. Now I'm back, but have 170 photos to process!

Having de-stressed myself I decided that I needed a treat to finish the process off, so I took a trip to a new nature reserve that I'd not been too. The light was magical, soft and golden, the air was crisp and cold, the ground frozen where the sun hadn't reached. I'll post some pics when I sort them out, but this will do for now, straight out of the camera.

Oh does anyone want anymore excitement? The police cordoned off our housing estate last night, imaginations ran riot. It turned out that a conservation volunteer on the local nature reserve had found an unexploded mortar shell while laying hedges!!!
johnloguk > 27.7.08 - Classic English Village Church?

Yesterday was really hot and humid, and when you can't eat anymore ice creams or drink anymore ice cold ginger beer where can you go to stay cool? Well I decided to explore this old churchyard and get some shelter under the trees. Skellingthorpe is just outside Lincoln, about 8 miles from my part of town. The church looks very old, but it is deceptive. I've found it very hard to get information on it, but I think it dates from the 1500s, although it was re-built in 1865, and again in 1916 after a fire. It is certainly very photogenic. I have a small gallery of shots here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/5548064_iTvPM#339889684_BAiMi

It took me ages to decide on a Daily from these. I did several sepia conversions, some B&Ws and a couple of nice watercolours, but eventually went for this one.
johnloguk > 14.2.09 - All You Need is Love!

The Red Arrows doing their thing above Lincoln yesterday afternoon, you gotta love those guys. If I wasn't a member of the Dailies I would almost certainly not had my camera with me to capture this, have a great weekend everyone :)
