Just another wet shot from this evening in town
johnloguk > 18.02.10 - Blowin' in the Wind

When I went out this evening it was just starting to snow, but it never got beyond the sleety stage. After the last 2 nights in town and round the Uni, I decided to cut my losses and go back to the Cathedral, which is a lot nearer anyway. This is along the south side, and is hopefully a new view for most of you. It was very difficult conditions for photography, the wind swirling in every direction, driving the sleet into every nook and cranny. I like the way the floodlights catch the sleet, and the car lights reflecting in the wet cobbles add something too.
johnloguk > Sleet!

Familiar territory, different weather! Snow was forecast, but at the time of posting all we've had is sleet. If you enlarge this you can see it blowing in the floodlights. I never tire of the photo opportunities around the Cathedral, and the worse the weather the more photogenic it gets :)

johnloguk > 16.02.10 - Wet

It has been a glorious day here today, but I was far too busy to take any photos in the sunshine. No problem I thought, I'll take some this evening, then the rain came!

This is a quick shot from the roof of a car park in town. Almost deserted apart from the group of guys and me getting wet.
johnloguk > 02.02.10 - The Light

The only good thing about a day of cold drizzle is that it makes cobbles very photogenic! As soon as I'd finished work I went in search of wet cobbles. Usually I would like a person in a photo like this, but I like the atmosphere in this as it is. I deliberately under-exposed the shot to emphasise the light.
johnloguk > Time Passes

As a photographer I'm inspired by beautiful landscapes, striking images, magical light, all the usual stuff. But there are other less tangible things such as history and the threads that connect places through time. I'm lucky to live in a beautiful old City that breathes history on every corner, and has more photo opps than you can shake a stick at. There had been people living in and around Lincoln for millennia before the Romans arrived, and this narrow street has witnessed so many things in it's time. The Romans marched through here two thousand years ago, on their way to the fort on top of the hill, a thousand years before the Cathedral was built.

I find it impossible to look at a scene like this without thinking of all those people, what they were doing, where they were going, and what they were thinking?

Now shoppers and tourists, and photographers on their way back to their car on a cold wet December evening, pass this way. I've taken this shot, or one very like it, many times before, but there is always something different so I never tire of it.
johnloguk > 8.12.09 - Get Down!

I had almost given up on finding any natural colour in December, but in reality I had just stopped looking properly. A local cafe had agreed to stock some flyers for my work, and on the way back to the car I walked through the Arboretum for the first time in a few weeks. There were plenty of bright berries, even a few small Winter flowers, but the real beauty was a small patch of dead leaves. It was very dark down in the wet grass, but for a few seconds they were illuminated by a shaft of light slicing through the trees. The best way to show them off was to get down and wet, but I think it was worth it. There are some more shots here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Nature/THE-ARBORETUM/6049364_a8pPu#735846472_YQuXX

I was going to add a dark vignette to frame this, but the more I looked at it the more I realised that it already had a natural one. I was shooting at ISO 800 because of the low light, but the sudden shaft of light gave a fast shutter speed in the end. I increased the contrast slightly to bring the colour back, and an unsharp mask adds to the natural grain and impressionistic feel.
