johnloguk > 25.01.10 - Signs of the Past

When I walked past this sign I thought someone had drawn graffiti on it, then I realised that the fine lines and patterns were fossils. Closer inspection revealed that the stones in the wall were full of the same fossils, they were only more evident in the sign because it was polished. Some of you may know that I trained as geologist many years ago, and it still remains a hobby, so I spent a long time examining these.

Some of you might be interested in the photographic technique here, it is one I like to use every now and again. Rather than use a macro or long lens, I used a wide angle 18mm and got very close to the subject. It gives an interesting perspective and dof.

This is your last chance if you want to vote for me over at Photography Corner in their Photo of 2009 Competition. My entry is "Ghosts of Christmas Present"

johnloguk > 6.5.09 - Watcher on the Wall

You've seen this guy before, but not like this. On a sunny day he looks quite friendly, but today this reflection caught my eye as I walked past and I thought he looked pretty menacing. I thought there was an Orwellian quality to this, and the B&W adds to the bleakness. And like those old wartime recruitment posters his eyes seem to follow you around, very "Big Brother", have a nice day :)

Late edit; the face is on the wall of an Art Centre
johnloguk > 13.3.08 - My first watercolour! I went into town for a meeting this morning and it was a beautiful warm sunny day. 45 minutes later it was grey, drizzly and cold. I took a few photos but wasn't happy with any of them, especially this one which was very flat and boring. I had a vision of it in my head as a watercolour painting and once I got home set about realising the vision. I must admit to often floundering around in photoshop, hoping for something nice to happen, but today I felt in control of the software, rather than the other way round, and I'm really pleased with this. I'm sure there is an easy option in photoshop where you click a tab and it automatically creates a watercolour, but this was done entirely by altering the levels and contrast.

I've just tried the same technique on a more iconic subject, and the result can be found here http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4222541_LCXPH#265320375
johnloguk > 8.3.08 - I'm a bit fed up today. I should be in Scotland climbing in the snow, but instead I'm stuck at home taking photos of old post boxes again. The weather in Scotland is terrible this weekend, gales, rain and low cloud, so maybe I am better off here.

I pass this post box nearly every time I go into town, so it was about time I took a photo. It isn't as old as the Victorian one from a few days ago, but it pre-dates our current Queen and is at least 55 years old, probably older. But the wall is much older, made from stones that were originally in the castle walls, and some might even have been in the Roman wall before that.

Anyway, I might just go for a run before the rain reaches Lincoln, and then I can settle down for an afternoon infront of the TV watching international rugby, bring it on!
johnloguk > 26.2.08 - Low Barlings. I was out of town this morning and took a detour to visit this ruined 12th century abbey. This bit of wall, and a few hummocks in the ground, are all that remains of a building that once dominated the surrounding flatlands. It looks beautiful and sunny in the photo, but there was a bitter wind blowing. What we call a "lazy wind". It can't be bothered to go round you, so it goes straight through you!
