johnloguk > 3.12.09 - Steaming Ahead

I was expecting to be posting another night shot today, but that was until a friend told me that a steam train was coming to town this afternoon. This is the steam locomotive "Bittern", built in 1937, and very impressive it was too. It was bringing people from London to Lincoln's Christmas Market, which is highly likely to feature in my Dailies over the next few days.

I thought the sepia treatment suited the subject matter, but a lot more "normal" shots of the train can be found here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/10523514_oR9rh#730816291_E5sr2
johnloguk > 8.11.09 - Waiting Patiently

I spent much of the weekend at a Model Railway Exhibition. Saturday I took the twins, and watched them fall under the spell that has captured millions of kids before them. Sunday I took the camera and had a great time all on my own!

Many of us will have had a model railway when we were younger, but few people get to create the detailed alternative worlds that were on show this weekend. It was a very challenging shoot, ambient light, lots of people milling around, and tiny subject matter. This particular shot was taken through the entrance to a miniature Station. I took more than a dozen photos from this position, and they all look totally different because they depend on where the very shallow depth of field is focused.

There is a gallery of shots from the exhibition here, please visit it if you have the time, but be prepared to get lost in there; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/MODEL-RAILWAY-EXHIBITION/10251184_B9N36#707077837_nomY3
johnloguk > 29.10.09 - The Bullet Train :)

I promised another low light shot today, but wanted to do something different. Finding a viewpoint is often the hardest part about shots like these. Getting a little bit of elevation makes so much difference. I remembered this multi-story car park in the middle of town and headed there after a trip to the bank late this afternoon.

There is a gallery of all the shots I took this evening here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/10135831_DCWMi#P-1-20

With 4 extras and a very different mood here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/BLACK-AND-WHITE/4333863_ympF9#696880583_Uns8A

All of the exif data has been preserved this time for those who want to follow it. Thanks for all the great comments and questions on my shutter speed collage. Special thanks to John Murphy for adding some fine advice too. For those worried about camera shake, use the self timer if you haven't got a remote shutter release. Also, placing the camera on a soft bag (I use a rucsac) helps absorb some of the vibration, like I had here from the trains. John mentioned using a low ISO to minimise noise, as night shots can be very prone to noise. Nikon have a long exposure noise reduction feature in their cameras, I assume Canon etc are similar? Definitely turn that on. Don't worry too much about the aperture, as dof isn't critical in most night shots. When you're experimenting, concentrate purely on the shutter speed, as that is what catches the movement and creates the ghosting effects and light streaks. I hope you enjoy the gallery and associated camera info, I'll try and keep this going for a while, as I love it so much :)

By the way, the "bullet" train was only doing about 15 mph
johnloguk > 2.5.09 - Ready, Steady, Gooooooooooooooo

While I was in town this morning I took a load of shots from the roof of a car park. These seem to work better together than on their own, best viewed huge to see the details. It is a beautiful warm sunny day here, just right for a long run after lunch. Have a great day :)

I've now created a small gallery of shots taken from the car park here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/8078175_3x5eC#526296233_eFsWU
johnloguk > 30.3.09 - "Yes dear you're probably right, we should have stayed on the other side of the gate"

I wish I'd had time to frame this properly, to include the big sign on the right warning about the trains, but it all happened so quickly. It isn't as dangerous as it looks, the 200mm foreshortens everything, but it looked pretty spectacular from where I was standing!

My Monday Challenge shot is here; http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/7093288_hSxt4#501858734_BTReT
johnloguk > Stuck at a railway crossing in the rain. It is interesting that the watercolour effect not only shows up the filthy windscreen, but it also reveals the heater elements in the glass
johnloguk > 4.4.08 - Friday is always my manic day, it should have at least 30 hours in it then I'd be fine. I got home around 7pm, prepared a curry and left it in the oven while I went back out to finish off a few things. That went faster than I thought, so I had an hour to kill before the food was ready, then I realised I hadn't taken a DP yet. Quick trip into town, and some long exposures off the top of this multi-storey car park. This is a corner of the Brayford Pool that I don't think you've seen yet, including a train heading into the station. The white blobs on the far bank are swans! Now I've just eaten the best Lamb Madras I've ever cooked, the beer is fine, "Collateral" is on the TV, life is good and snow is forecast for the weekend!!!!
