johnloguk > 16.03.10 - Silhouettes

Another trip down to the river at sunset this evening. Low cloud on the horizon quickly put paid to anything spectacular in the sky, but there is always something if you look hard enough. I've shot teasles before silhouetted against the sun, this is similar, but different. The back lighting isn't the sun this time, but the sun reflected in the river. It makes for a pleasing effect, and less of a burning sensation to my retinas!

Thank-you for all the nice comments on my recent Dailies, they have been well out of proportion to my own comments on other people's work. I'm hoping the pace of things will slow down soon and enable me to comment as much as I would like.
johnloguk > 15.03.10 - Little Rainbows

I've been searching for inspiration for the DGrin mega Challenge, and thought that a sunset trip to Fiskerton Fen might do the trick. It certainly inspired and got my creative juices flowing, the light was almost perfect, but now I have too many ideas and don't know what to chose!

This is a seed head on a reed, and if you look closely you'll see lots of tiny rainbows as the microscopic filaments act as prisms on the low angled light. The effect of this on the whole area of reeds swaying in the breeze was mesmeric, I've never seen anything like it before. They were very difficult to photograph though, as the auto focus struggled to lock on to the moving targets, and I had to resort to manual focus on many occasions.

There are some more shots from the walk, including another spectacular sunset, here;

johnloguk > 5.03.10 - Shock and Awe

You have to believe me that I'm trying to avoid taking this view, I must be wearing a groove along the old quarry with all the times I've rushed down there to catch a sunset! I had great plans for a Daily today, involving a trip into town and shooting the Empowerment sculpture at night. Maybe even getting a DGrin Challenge entry out of it. But when I saw this developing out of my window I just grabbed my gear and ran down to the quarry again!

I've had more than a few spectacular sunsets from here, but I don't think I've ever seen such a vivid red in the sky as tonight. Apart from an unsharp mask and a pano crop this is SOOC, and I can only tell you that it doesn't come close to catching the full majesty of the moment.

This is from a wonderful walk along the river at sunset this evening, so many photo opportunities in such a short time. The whole gallery is here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Landscapes/TAKE-ME-TO-THE-RIVER/11417457_7vXnM#802542190_KRqri
johnloguk > 1.03.10 - Back Light

At the end of a busy day I was just winding down. I'd visited my last two customers and had just driven into the car park at my local shops. The sky was dark and heavy, then suddenly the sun dropped below the bank of cloud and sat there just above the horizon. From the shops it was some way off to the right of the cathedral, but I knew if I could get to the quarry quickly I could find a viewpoint were the sun would be directly behind it. Luckily the quarry was only a few hundred yards away, and I just got there in time to catch this!

When opportunities present themselves you sometimes just have to take them.
johnloguk > 22.02.10 - Towers of Power

This shot was taken on Saturday, it was also meant to be my entry for the latest DGrin challenge "silhouette", but I messed up! I've been so caught up with work lately, then Sunday was all about the kids and sledging, so I completely forgot the deadline for the challenge was this morning :(

This image is spectacular, but it is also a bit fussy. The left hand pole drives me mad, I'd clone it away if I could be bothered, but priorities are elsewhere at the moment.

Here is the sunset done as a sequence; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/INSPIRATION/10329875_Lpojy#794841079_EJ9zL
johnloguk > 11.02.10 - Nature's Palette

This afternoon I had some free time, and rather than sit at home in front of the computer I went for a photo drive to get myself some fresh air and some fresh vistas. There is a full gallery here;

This photo was the culmination of a stunning sunset, and I put it in a frame because I think it deserves it. I lightened the shadows in Elements to reveal some of the details in the frozen fields and the village at the bottom of the hill, otherwise this is SOOC. It was a great viewpoint to watch the sunset unfold, and if you look at X3L you will notice distant Lincoln Cathedral on the horizon at bottom left.

It was an afternoon well spent, but of course the irony is that I've spent all evening on the computer processing the pics :)

This is a variation of my Daily Photo for today. At sunset I usually go for the big sky look at 18mm, but today I tried something that I haven't tried for a long time. I went for a longer lens and looked for things to silhouette against the hazy sun. Sometimes it pays to focus, literally, on the smaller details rather than the bigger picture. That sounds almost profound :)
