Another grey day today, but I managed to get out for a walk at lunchtime. I liked the silhouette of this old tree, and the hedges disappearing into the misty distance down to the river. The humps and hollows in the foreground are the remains of the long lost Medieval village of South Greetwell. All that is left standing is the church and old hall, which have featured in my Dailies before.

Huge thanks to everyone who left such wonderful comments on yesterday's sunset silhouette. I was amazed to come home and find it as the most popular shot of the day this evening :)
johnloguk > Under a Blood Red Sky

Another experiment from this evening. I'm ashamed to say that I've never really noticed this old church before. I always knew it was there, but never took the time to check it out properly. It is empty now, awaiting permission for it to be turned into residential flats, but I thought it looked very Gothic today under a grey sky and those stark tree branches. My photos didn't do it justice without processing, and a straight B&W conversion wasn't what I wanted either. But I like the juxtaposition of the old dark church and the bustling lights of the modern city below. I'm not completely happy with this, but I hope the red filter has given it a more apocalyptic quality, like a still from a bad horror movie :)
johnloguk > Walk on by......

Something a bit different from me today. I was at a local Nature Reserve this afternoon taking landscapes, and trying to catch some very elusive wildfowl, and then I spotted this couple on the opposite bank of the river. I thought they'd look good if I could silhouette them against the sky, but there were too many cables and trees cluttering the background. So I ran right down to the water's edge and crouched as low as I possibly could, and bingo! The original was almost monochrome anyway, but I did a B&W conversion, played in levels and contrast to darken it up, added a vignette, and it looks a lot moodier than it actually was. Luckily they were lost in conversation and didn't notice me, or they might have thought I'd gone mad!
johnloguk > 21.12.08 - Stark Beauty

Unseasonably warm weather yesterday, so I spent most of it outdoors taking photos. Unfortunately Smugmug chose yesterday to keep crashing, so I hardly managed to upload any shots or make many comments. I uploaded some to my Arboretum Gallery here, the late afternoon light was wonderful; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6049364_a8pPu#440619538_hTHUB

I then went to Lincoln South Common for the actual sunset, which was stunning. This wasn't the most spectacular sunset shot, it was pretty much at the end of the "show", but I really like the composition in this one.

Update, more sunsets from the South Common last night are now uploaded; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#440961314_c8Jgr
johnloguk > 19.9.08 - Backlit

People look pretty good with a nice backlight shining through their hair, and apparently it works with windmills too :) This wasn't originally my plan, but I couldn't get round to the floodlit side because the Windmill is fenced off at night. The idea is that the lighting is for people viewing from afar, not from close-up. But after my initial disappointment I thought that this looked quite good anyway, especially when I converted to B&W and played with the contrast a bit.

The mischievous side of me was thinking that this is a warning, to the greedy scum gambling with our futures in the financial markets, that seem to be trying to drive us back into the Stone Age with their lust for the next bonus cheque. I'm going to buy myself a windmill and I'll be OK when the lights go out :)
