johnloguk > 21.02.10 - What a Difference a Day Makes!

This is the same fountain that I was photographing yesterday, and the bank behind is where I shot the beautiful crocuses for yesterday's daily. The snow was forecast, but it was still a surprise to wake up to it this morning. It was my day for the kids, so sledging was on the agenda before the snow melted again. The Arboretum is great for it. The slopes are safe for 7 years olds, and there is a wonderful cafe to get a hot chocolate and slice of cake :)

By the afternoon most of the snow was gone, although it is freezing again as I type.
johnloguk > 11.02.10 - Nature's Palette

This afternoon I had some free time, and rather than sit at home in front of the computer I went for a photo drive to get myself some fresh air and some fresh vistas. There is a full gallery here;

This photo was the culmination of a stunning sunset, and I put it in a frame because I think it deserves it. I lightened the shadows in Elements to reveal some of the details in the frozen fields and the village at the bottom of the hill, otherwise this is SOOC. It was a great viewpoint to watch the sunset unfold, and if you look at X3L you will notice distant Lincoln Cathedral on the horizon at bottom left.

It was an afternoon well spent, but of course the irony is that I've spent all evening on the computer processing the pics :)
johnloguk > 04.02.10 - Grey Daze

This was the view just down the road from me, over Greetwell Hollow Nature Reserve this lunchtime. The snow last night didn't amount to much, but most of today has been miserably cold and foggy.

Compare this view to a Summer day http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Nature/GREETWELL-HOLLOW-NATURE/5121648_aU8pe#624536084_ZWQhH-X3-LB It is hard to imagine the variety of colours that this place goes through over 12 months.
johnloguk > 11.01.10 - Back on the Road Again

Finally got the car going again today, and after much pursing of lips and sharp intakes of breath it now seems that the problem is simply that the battery needs replacing. So hopefully no great expense, but I'm not counting my chickens just yet. You can see that the temperature gauge says +2C, and we have had a considerable thaw today. However, there is still some snow on this small country lane just outside town.

I'm still run off my feet, and struggling to get people to pay me the money they owe, but tonight I'm having my first game of squash this year, and that will get rid of much pent up adrenaline. Today saw a huge change on my website, as there was a change in my most popular photo for the first time in a very long time. It is nice when people take the time to look back at old photos as well as the current Daily, and many of you boosted my "fire and ice" shot over the last 24 hours.

This is a very boring shot compared to many on my site, so I don't expect this to rank very highly. But this is just one of those slice of life shots, whereas others do have some pretensions towards art :)
johnloguk > 8.1.10 - Green for Go!

It's been another of those days, no car again so many hours spent rushing around on foot, and finally got home about 8pm. I was doing deliveries this evening, and luckily one of my customers wasn't in as arranged, which gave me the chance to walk up the road and take a few shots. This is a different view of the Cathedral, usually I get closer to avoid getting traffic lights and other modern protuberances in the photos. The camera was resting against a bus stop to steady it for the 1/4 second exposure, and it hasn't come out too bad considering how rushed I was. By the time I'd finished the customer had returned, so it was time well spent.
johnloguk > 7.1.10 - Not a Pretty Sight ;)

Well my day started badly when the car refused to start again. I had hoped that the problems were over, but I was too optimistic. Anyway, it was another beautiful bright but cold day, and I always try to put a positive spin on things. So when I had to go on the long trek round my customers I decided to take the scenic route wherever possible. The best bits were criss-crossing the old quarry and nature reserve. I took lots of nice shots, but for some reason that escapes me I have chosen this one as my Daily! Bright sun is the bane of wedding photographers, just one of many reasons why I don't do them, all those people with gritted teeth squinting into the light just like this.

Having had my day in the sun I'm now headed back out into the freezing dark night for a couple of hours, which isn't going to be quite so much fun :(

Fun in the snow on the Cathedral East Lawn
johnloguk > Ghosts in the Snow

You may have guessed by now that I have a passion for night photography, but not just static objects, I love the opportunities for showing movement too. This exposure was only half a second, much more and moving things start to disappear completely. I have my favourite spots for this type of photography, and I really love the magical back lighting given by the Cathedral floodlights here. We had a fresh covering of snow today, so this evening the Cathedral lawns were full of families building snowmen and generally having fun. It is very rare to get so many people in a shot like this. I decided to focus on the trees and buildings in the background, because everything in front was going to be moving anyway. I fired off about 20 shots, some wide angle, some zoomed in close, and tried to second guess where people were going to move to. It was fun, despite the bitter cold, and I got a few nice combinations of action going on.

There are a lot of myths about night photography, many people avoid it like the plague, which is a real shame. It is a sort of mission of mine to break those myths and get everyone out shooting at night. The possibilities are endless, and the results can be quite magical.
johnloguk > 5.1.10 - Golden Snow

More snow today, infinitely preferable to the ice of the last couple of days, and I got my car going again (thanks Mike for your help). I didn't get chance to take any photos all day, until a gap between customers this evening gave me the chance of a short walk round the Cathedral. Families were busy making snowmen on the East Lawn under the floodlights, and the fine snow fell like golden sparkles, it was quite magical.

Thank you for the very kind comments on my Himalayan panorama, it has become one of my all time favourite images, and I'm glad so many other people liked it as well. Weather permitting I hope to get a few more snow shots tomorrow, fingers crossed :)
