johnloguk > 26.01.10 - First Full On Sunset of the Year :)

I was beginning to despair that we would have a nice sunset this month, and as I saw the sun disappear behind a low bank of cloud this afternoon I thought our run of bad luck would continue. Then a few minutes after I got home I noticed a pink glow in the window, and this was happening. I put my shoes and jacket back on, and raced down to the quarry for an unrestricted view. The colour was disappearing fast, so I fired a few shots off without setting the camera up properly. The images turned out a bit noisy because of the high ISO, which I didn't need or notice at the time. But luckily 2 of the images did fit together in this photomerge panorama, so as well as the colours you can get an idea of the sharp cloud front on the left that was moving down from the North. I wish I'd had more time to catch this properly, but time is one of the many things that a photographer can't always control!

Thank-you to everyone who has voted for me in the Photography Corner Competition. I have no great expectations as I'm up against so many awesome images, but the result should be out tomorrow.
johnloguk > 4.1.10 - Glory Days!

This image is a labour of love, and it has been over 20 years in the making. It is a 3-shot photomerge panorama from some old transparencies taken on my first trip to the Nepal Himalaya back in 1988! The centre and right hand photos have appeared in a pano on the Dailies before, but until this evening I've not been able to join up the left hand shot of the mighty Ama Dablam.

The problem was that the tones were slightly different, and I just could not get them to match up. So I decided to try a B&W conversion and a sepia filter over the top of the image, with a fair bit of cloning to match up the sky. It seemed to work, and a white vignette completed another Ansel Adams homage. I've added the mountain names for anyone who knows the area, so they can work out roughly where Taweche Towers is. I've said before that it is the single most beautiful and spectacular place I've ever been to, 18,500' up above the blazed trail from Namche Bazaar to Everest Base Camp, and rarely visited.
johnloguk > 11.10.09 - Triple

It's been a while since I tried one of these. I've had a manic, but fun, weekend, can't complain about being busy or taking the kids to the circus :)

I finally got some time to myself late this afternoon and took a walk down to the Arboretum. I've taken hundreds of photos there so was trying to find different perspectives. I shot a lot at 200mm, and also shot a lot at 18mm with the intention of doing panoramic crops later. Several of the "panos" broke down nicely into multiple shots, which is how I ended up creating this triptych.

johnloguk > 5.9.09 - Flood Plain

This is another 3 shot photomerge panorama (I seem to be in a bit of a rut with them at the moment, but they are fun). I actually took the shots last Wednesday, but only joined them up this evening. The view is looking in the opposite direction to the shot of the fishermen that I posted yesterday. This is on the South side of the City, where the land is very low lying and prone to flooding.
johnloguk > 2.9.09 - Wide

This is a 3 shot photomerge panorama, taken from the Observatory Tower at Lincoln Castle. The view is from north through to about east-south-east. The Swiss couple were happy to pose for me, and I like the way the panorama captures both them and the view they were shooting. It was quite difficult to match the 3 shots together, and I did more cloning across one of the joins than I would usually bother with, but it is all good fun.

I'm really struggling to comment much at the moment, but I am managing to check through most of the wonderful Dailies and leave a few thumbs up. Thank-you to everyone who manages to comment on my images despite my lack of reciprocation.
johnloguk > 13.8.09 - From the West

Well at least you've been spared another SP today, but don't inspect this 3 shot photomerge panorama too closely, it isn't technically great. I went blackberry picking on the old quarry after work this evening, there is a wonderful crop to last through the Summer, yum yum.

It has been a beautiful day today, but this bank of cloud came in to blot out the sunset. It looks like an old blown out storm that shed it's load somewhere to the West of Lincoln, which thankfully most storms do. The UK is a land of westerlies, so living on the Eastern side means we stay relatively dry. Originally I was disappointed with the sky, but the more I look at it the more I like the subtle flecks of colour in the clouds and the richness of the ground.
johnloguk > 2.8.09 - After the Storm (2 shot photomerge panorama)

Well it rained, and rained, and rained, but then this happened! I could have taken a similar shot from my window, the whole sky was a mass of changing colour, but I'm glad I went for a drive to get this view. It is only a mile away, if that, the Cathedral is on the left and the small country lane on the right. The lane was flooded in places, and that gave a very different perspective on the sunset, as you can see here http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/gallery/4053411_yY5Qg#608061724_cB9cS

This was taken from almost exactly the same spot as this http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/gallery/7240041_kZdsG#604566139_X7ehW What a difference a few days make!
johnloguk > 21.5.09 - The Bigger Picture

It's a long time since I made a panorama, and I'm really pleased with this one so it is a worthy Daily. But there is a complicated story behind this shot. It had been a very stormy morning, and when I left home this afternoon I was hoping for some more rainbows. Instead I got bright sunshine and wildflowers, not a bad substitute. Then the clouds bubbled up again and we had more storms in late afternoon, including hail, a real "four seasons in one day". This pano was taken as the afternoon storms were building. It is comprised of 3 shots, taken from Lincoln South Common looking north to the Cathedral. The view is probably about 150 degrees and is best viewed as big as you can to see all the details. The flat Trent Valley is to the west (left), with two power stations on the horizon. Lincoln City's football ground is also on the left just beyond the Common. I live just over the hill on the right of the shot.

I have to go out again this evening chasing customers that I missed earlier, but I hope to check out the Dailies when I get back. Thanks for the comments on my swan family yesterday, that is one of my favourite shots.

Late Edit; I've just started a new gallery of shots from the South Common, including a 4 shot pano with an extra photo added to the left of this one; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/gallery/8287118_NSdiL#542585661_N4q52
johnloguk > 16.1.09 - Nature Reserve Panorama

Apart from the glorious sunshine on Wednesday we've had unrelenting cold grey days for a while. Today started grey and drizzly, but in late afternoon fresh air blew in from the SW and we got clear skies. As this was happening I had 30 minutes to kill before an appointment so went for a stroll round the nature reserve to clear my head. The houses in the central distance are where I live, and this is where I go for regular walks/runs. It is also where a conservation volunteer found that mortar shell the other day, so I was more careful than usual where I put my feet! Although this is far from a real wilderness area, I strongly believe that it is imperative that we preserve as many areas like this as we can, especially those close to towns and cities. Unfortunately others think it is a waste of good building land, and another opportunity to exploit Mother Nature and our fellow man. But I'm starting to rant now and I'm far too tired for that :)

Thanks for all the kind words on the collage yesterday and the golden reeds shot from the day before, they are two of my personal favourites at the moment.
