johnloguk > 06.02.10 - Stark

Another grey day today, but I managed to get out for a walk at lunchtime. I liked the silhouette of this old tree, and the hedges disappearing into the misty distance down to the river. The humps and hollows in the foreground are the remains of the long lost Medieval village of South Greetwell. All that is left standing is the church and old hall, which have featured in my Dailies before.

Huge thanks to everyone who left such wonderful comments on yesterday's sunset silhouette. I was amazed to come home and find it as the most popular shot of the day this evening :)
johnloguk > 15.01.10 - Warm Oasis

I took a detour on my way home this evening. I had an idea to shoot some shots of the buildings around the green in Nettleham, a large village just outside town. But there were just too many parked cars and overhead wires in all the wider shots, so I decided to concentrate on the pub instead. The first couple of shots were missing something, then this small group of people came along and completed the scene :)

Sadly I didn't go inside for a beer because I had curried meatballs waiting in the oven back home, maybe another day.

Just a last reminder to check out my entry in the first round of the photograph of the Year Competition at Photography Corner, and feel free to vote for me if you think my effort is worth it. You need to register, thumbs up are great but they don't register as a vote :)

johnloguk > 2.12.09 - The Fruits of my Labours

This popped through the post today, the latest holiday brochure for Lincolnshire. This was my complimentary copy for the photographic work I did back in September. There are a lot of my photos in there, so hopefully I'll get asked again next time :)

Expect a lot more night shots over the next few days, as Lincoln's Christmas Market starts tomorrow, and weather permitting I'll be up there firing away.
johnloguk > 27.1.09 - Spot the Snowdrops :)

This morning was cold and foggy, but the fog lifted just as I was driving past this old church, so I took the opportunity of grabbing a few shots in the churchyard. A common feature of English churchyards is amazing old trees, and there are some real beauties here. If you look closely in the foreground there is also a carpet of snowdrops just peeping through the grass. I'll try and catch up later, but it has been a very busy day :)

Late Edit; OK, by popular request, there is a B&W here in a gallery I've just put together from today - http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/7207771_aGrkL#P-1-15

This is another shot from my walk yesterday, but I was so pleased with the sepia conversion that I had to share it with you in this format. I just love the old tree, I bet it could tell some tales. If you follow the Google Maps feature you will see a very detailed aerial photo, which shows the earthworks of the old mediaeval village around the church.

johnloguk > 18.1.09 - Church on the Hill

Another glorious sunny day here today, so I had to make the most of it, and went for a walk this afternoon near the village of Walesby, about 25 miles NE of Lincoln. The light was stunning, and I timed things to include sunset. This church is on top of a hill, at almost the highest point in the County, and it really is in a great spot. I've got over 100 photos to process and put the best into a gallery, which I'll link from here later. There will even be some interior shots to satisfy the lovers of stained glass on the Dailies :)

The gallery of shots from today is now up at; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/7127583_esapS#457112216_4J8cP

I promise I'll try to catch up with my commenting as well this evening :)

johnloguk > 8.10.08 - Autumn Lines

I managed to get out for a walk this afternoon to the south of the City. I walked along the low limestone ridge known as Lincoln Edge. It is barely 200ft above the surrounding flatlands, but the views are extensive, serious Big Sky Country. I'm in the process of putting a gallery of these shots together and will link to it from here when I'm finished. But in the meantime here is an alternative Autumnal image for today. Alternate to all the beautiful shots of trees changing colour that is.

Lincolnshire is an intensively agricultural County, and at this time of year the fields all turn to brown after the crops are harvested. Then there is furious activity, raking and ploughing, followed by sowing the winter crops. I like this image for the mass of lines created by the various activities in the fields, and the perspective from my high viewpoint on the ridge. The low light accentuates the shapes and textures, I'm really quite chuffed with this (that means pretty happy by the way!)

I've finally managed to upload the other shots from today here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/6180319_KA93S/1/389753374_T35ap#389753374_T35ap
johnloguk > 16.5.08 - I haven't had chance to take any photos today, usual manic Friday and our first rain for ages. So I thought it was time to do another sepia of something old and lovely. I tried an SP first but it didn't work out ;)

The monument on the left is a memorial to men of the Parish who died in the Great War. Sad to think that the bloodbath touched even this secluded village in the middle of rural Lincolnshire.

Coincidentally, this morning I had a fleeting chance to take a photo of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight of WW2 aircraft. Today is the 65th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid, and the last remaining Lancaster bomber was given an escort of Spitfires, Hurricanes and a C47 Dakota over Lincoln. Before doing a photoshoot over the dams they practiced on in Derbyshire. Every time I heard their engines coming I rushed for my camera, but never quite made it in time, very frustrating.
