johnloguk > 4.1.10 - Glory Days!

This image is a labour of love, and it has been over 20 years in the making. It is a 3-shot photomerge panorama from some old transparencies taken on my first trip to the Nepal Himalaya back in 1988! The centre and right hand photos have appeared in a pano on the Dailies before, but until this evening I've not been able to join up the left hand shot of the mighty Ama Dablam.

The problem was that the tones were slightly different, and I just could not get them to match up. So I decided to try a B&W conversion and a sepia filter over the top of the image, with a fair bit of cloning to match up the sky. It seemed to work, and a white vignette completed another Ansel Adams homage. I've added the mountain names for anyone who knows the area, so they can work out roughly where Taweche Towers is. I've said before that it is the single most beautiful and spectacular place I've ever been to, 18,500' up above the blazed trail from Namche Bazaar to Everest Base Camp, and rarely visited.

johnloguk > 14.11.08 - Escapism

Some days drive you mad, and then there was today! What could go wrong did go wrong, and what didn't go wrong didn't matter anyway. For the fifth week running my courier messed up and my brain exploded. I'm normally such a placid, philosophical and pragmatic guy, but repeated incompetence sometimes needs a rant to get the message across. Next Friday will tell whether or not the rant was worth it, I wait with baited breath.

You will have noticed from past Dailies that when I'm really p****d off I retreat into my head and beautiful high mountains. This is one of my favourite places, it has featured here before, but this is a new panoramic image that I created this evening to cheer myself up. This is Taweche Towers, at about 18,000', looking south across the Khumbu Valley in Nepal. Mount Everest is back over my left shoulder. Considerably less people have stood on the summit of Taweche Towers than have summitted Everest itself, this is a magical place. I wish I could take you all there.

And yes, I'm feeling much better now thanks :)
johnloguk > 7.4.08 - Inspiration! OK so this isn't a new photo, but I have been working on it today so it just about counts. Whenever I get a bit down, or the weather is grey and drizzly like today, I seek inspiration in thoughts of far off mountains. This was taken on my first trip to Nepal, which scarily was 20 years ago almost to the day. We did the Everest Base Camp trek, with a few more interesting add-ons, such as the stunning viewpoint of Taweche Towers at about 18,500'. The main Khumbu Valley (and all the people) is below, and the peak opposite is Kantega. My main ambition left in life is to stay fit enough to be able to take my 5yr old twins to the Himalaya. In the meantime, images like this will encourage me not to go totally to seed!
