johnloguk > 20.12.09 - First Snows

Woke up to a dusting of snow and pristine blue skies today, my kind of weather. Had a great time with the kids, snowballing and eating ourselves stupid. Even a walk to the shops turned into an epic as the snow returned with a passion this afternoon. The snow itself was the best I've had for making snowmen in about 30 years! This shot was taken this morning from the edge of the old quarry a few minutes from home. This place, and the adjacent nature reserve, is my playground all year round, I never tire of it.
johnloguk > 19.12.09 - Farmers Market

I had a lot of shots that I'd taken today in various places, and I was struggling to choose a Daily. I've gone for this one because of the eye contact between the guy on the right and the baby in the pushchair. I decided to leave in the distortion caused by the 18mm lens because it gives some sense of the buildings leaning in on you. I came across the Farmers Market purely by chance because my car wouldn't start and I had to walk into town and back this morning. It has been very cold and icy, but I much prefer that to wet and windy.

There are a few more shots from today here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/10696715_skuWA#744846419_7f7DH

It has been a real pain not having use of the car for the last two days, but it does prove how much you can get done on foot if you really have to!
johnloguk > 17.12.09 - Snow in the Sunset

It has been bitterly cold today, just above freezing but with a biting East wind making it feel much colder. All day blue skies alternated with snow flurries, and it made for an exciting sunset, so long as you had your back turned to the wind anyway!

Thanks for the kind words on yesterday's Daily, it is one of my personal favourites.
johnloguk > 14.12.09 - Shop 'til You Drop

Christmas shopping goes on whatever the weather! I had a strange case of deja vu when I was taking this. I'd just walked out of the bank, the building on the right, and noticed how the lights were reflecting off the pavement. It was raining hard so this was a snatched shot one handed, with the other hand trying to shelter the lens, not bad at 1/8th! As I was taking it I heard someone say "why is he taking a photo in the rain?", as if they couldn't see why! Just like the people bemoaning the fog last Friday up by the Cathedral. I sometimes wonder if most people see the world the same way as me, but I reckon it's their loss :)
johnloguk > 13.12.09 - December

I've finally finished the Nature Collages calendar. Thank-you for your support during this project, the calendar is now available for sale here

johnloguk > 12.12.09 - Blue Skies, Nothing but Blue Skies

Is it a nature reserve? Is it a wild wetland habitat? No it's the drainage overflow pond to a housing estate on the edge of town :)

We really haven't had much rain recently, and most of it has fallen at night, but this is the most water I've seen here. A local told me that the pond is starting to attract wild fowl, which is an added bonus for something that is basically an anti-flood measure. The reflections are another added bonus for photographers :)
johnloguk > 11.12.09 - Ghosts in the Mist

At the end of a very stressful day I was glad to be able to spend some time winding down with the camera. It had been a beautiful cloudless day, which in December usually means fog the moment the sun goes down. And last night was no exception. One thing that surprised me though. I bumped into several other photographers who were disappointed about the mist. Personally I can't see how it does anything but add atmosphere to a photograph, especially a view like this one!
johnloguk > 8.12.09 - Get Down!

I had almost given up on finding any natural colour in December, but in reality I had just stopped looking properly. A local cafe had agreed to stock some flyers for my work, and on the way back to the car I walked through the Arboretum for the first time in a few weeks. There were plenty of bright berries, even a few small Winter flowers, but the real beauty was a small patch of dead leaves. It was very dark down in the wet grass, but for a few seconds they were illuminated by a shaft of light slicing through the trees. The best way to show them off was to get down and wet, but I think it was worth it. There are some more shots here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Nature/THE-ARBORETUM/6049364_a8pPu#735846472_YQuXX

I was going to add a dark vignette to frame this, but the more I looked at it the more I realised that it already had a natural one. I was shooting at ISO 800 because of the low light, but the sudden shaft of light gave a fast shutter speed in the end. I increased the contrast slightly to bring the colour back, and an unsharp mask adds to the natural grain and impressionistic feel.
