johnloguk > 7.03.10 - Strangers in the Night

I've been busy busy busy with the kids all day so this is a re-working of a shot from about a week ago, but I was working on it tonight so hopefully that qualifies it as a Daily. The original image was very noisy, an occupational hazard with night photography, but the sepia filter and framing helps lift it I think. I'm always fascinated by images that tell a story, even if that story is of our own imagination. That is what struck me with this the first time I looked at it properly. The couple in the photo were clearly together, but their body language suggests that they are apart at this moment. The viewer can interpret it as they wish.

johnloguk > 28.02.10 - Call Me

This breaks so many rules of composition, but I've never been big on rules. I had no intention of doing another night shot today, but it was so grey and drab all day that I had to wait for dusk and the magic to come out to play.
johnloguk > 26.02.10 - Speed Gun

I often wonder how I must appear to passing motorists at times like this. There I am, hiding behind a lamp post (actually I'm using the post to steady the camera) with a strange black "thing" in my hands, pointing it at the traffic. There must be many a driver on his way home worrying that he might just have been "shot" by a cop with a speed gun :)

Thanks for the wonderful comments on yesterday's night shot. I know I get very evangelical about night photography, so please bear with me until the long light evenings of Summer :)
johnloguk > 18.02.10 - Blowin' in the Wind

When I went out this evening it was just starting to snow, but it never got beyond the sleety stage. After the last 2 nights in town and round the Uni, I decided to cut my losses and go back to the Cathedral, which is a lot nearer anyway. This is along the south side, and is hopefully a new view for most of you. It was very difficult conditions for photography, the wind swirling in every direction, driving the sleet into every nook and cranny. I like the way the floodlights catch the sleet, and the car lights reflecting in the wet cobbles add something too.
johnloguk > Sleet!

Familiar territory, different weather! Snow was forecast, but at the time of posting all we've had is sleet. If you enlarge this you can see it blowing in the floodlights. I never tire of the photo opportunities around the Cathedral, and the worse the weather the more photogenic it gets :)
johnloguk > 26.01.10 - First Full On Sunset of the Year :)

I was beginning to despair that we would have a nice sunset this month, and as I saw the sun disappear behind a low bank of cloud this afternoon I thought our run of bad luck would continue. Then a few minutes after I got home I noticed a pink glow in the window, and this was happening. I put my shoes and jacket back on, and raced down to the quarry for an unrestricted view. The colour was disappearing fast, so I fired a few shots off without setting the camera up properly. The images turned out a bit noisy because of the high ISO, which I didn't need or notice at the time. But luckily 2 of the images did fit together in this photomerge panorama, so as well as the colours you can get an idea of the sharp cloud front on the left that was moving down from the North. I wish I'd had more time to catch this properly, but time is one of the many things that a photographer can't always control!

Thank-you to everyone who has voted for me in the Photography Corner Competition. I have no great expectations as I'm up against so many awesome images, but the result should be out tomorrow.
johnloguk > 19.01.10 - Daytime Ghosts

It has been a very grey drab day today. I think this must be the worst light for photographers, and it is quite hard to find a subject that doesn't look flat and boring in a photograph. Movement is one of my stock solutions to this sort of situation, but I'm aware that traffic streaks are a bit of a cliche, so I've been trying to find different ways to do this. I've said before that most people seem to forget that you can take these shots in daylight, you don't have to wait until dark, just get the right combination of aperture and shutter speed. A handy lamp post to lean on negates the need to carry a tripod too ;)
johnloguk > 16.01.10 - Take me to the Bridge ;)

So here we are again, up on the bridge watching the traffic go by. There was a lot of misty low cloud about this evening, so I thought this shot might be a bit different from previous ones taken from here. I noticed earlier that it is more than a week since I shot a Daily during daylight hours, so I'll try to break that run tomorrow :)
