MY HOMETOWN : Like all Bruce Springsteen fans I'm very proud of "my hometown", so here is a gallery of photos showing some of my favourite places around Lincoln. I love the green spaces, where I often go for runs and generally recharge my batteries, but there is no escaping the majestic Cathedral and Historic Quarter. I hope that people who know Lincoln will find something new here, as well as a few old favourites. Of course there are plenty of beautiful Lincoln sunsets and more ethereal photos in other galleries.

I will keep adding photos to this gallery, so please feel free to come back again and again. Of course you could always visit us in person!

CHULU EAST TRIP : Back in 1991 a group of us went to Nepal to climb the "Trekking Peak" of Chulu East, in the Manang Himal. The walk-in was along the popular Annapurna Circuit trail, before heading north near the village of Ngawal to climb the peak. In those days there was some confusion about which was the right peak(!), and we know that the peak we climbed isn't the one that is now accepted as Chulu East. However, it was a great trip, a great mountain, and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. We didn't make the summit, as we ran out of time in deteriorating snow and weather conditions. The descent across the glacier in a thunderstorm in the dark was quite an experience! As we crossed the Thorung La pass towards the end of the trip, a small group of us did climb Thorung Peak, 6,200m, a similar height to Chulu, so we did get a summit in the end.

KATHMANDU : Most people tavelling to Nepal will spend some time in the capital Kathmandu. It is an intoxicating mix of ancient and modern. If only we could spend more time exploring its hidden corners, but we are usually in a hurry to get into the high mountains.

KHUMBU TREK : I've always loved mountains and wild places, and the ultimate for any mountaineeer is a trip to the Himalaya. Many years ago I decided to go to Nepal, and booked on an organised trek to the Khumbu region. I thought that this trip would "get it out of my system", that once I had seen Mount Everest I would be satisfied, and then could spend my life exploring the more cash friendly wild places of Britain. How wrong could I be! This trip to the Khumbu only made me more determined to visit wilder and higher places. The Khumbu is very busy, with trekkers as well as local people going about their lives. I was lucky that this trip did visit some rarely frequented places, such as the awesome Taweche Towers, as well as the normal tourist traps.

RAMDUNG PEAK TRIP : In 1989 a group of us went to Nepal to climb the "Trekking Peak" Mera. Unfortunately we had to change plans when our flight into the mountains was repeatedly cancelled by bad weather. We were lucky to get a permit for Ramdung Peak in the Rowaling region. The Rowaling had been closed to foreigners for over a decade, and only recently re-opened. We were the second group to visit the area after it re-opened, and didn't see any other trekkers or climbers while we were there, very rare for Nepal. The Rowaling is now a popular destination, but in those days it felt much more like the early pioneering days of exploring Nepal. We were stopped 50m short of the summit by sheet ice and a wind chill of at least minus 45 degrees, but the whole trip was a magical one.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DGRIN 19.4.08 : These are 10 of my photos from 19.4.08. It was a cold blustery day, and I've tried to be as varied as possible. I've used a "watercolour effect" that I developed myself on all of these images, so there is a sort of theme there running through them all. Originally I thought I would post a series of mundane shots representing a "normal" day, then a friend asked me to give her a guided tour of Lincoln. The old historic part of town is so photogenic, and this is only a small part of it. All photos were taken in and around the Castle, with the nearby Cathedral prominent. I've included brief commentaries for each individual shot.

BARTON ON HUMBER WATERSIDE : Barton is a small town on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, UK. In the 1970s the old ferry was replaced by the Humber Bridge, at the time the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. As most people were now bypassing the town it fell into decline. But in recent years it has started to recover, using the nature reserves and salt marshes along the coast to attract a new generation of tourists.

These photos were taken during snatched moments on a business trip to Barton, so they are not very extensive (yet)

MOUNT KENYA and KILIMANJARO : The two highest mountains in Africa make a brilliant trip. We used Mount Kenya to acclimatise to the altitude, and by the time we got to "Kili" we were by far the fittest group on the mountain. I would recommend Mount Kenya for those wanting a more wilderness experience, Kili is far too crowded for that. We climbed Point Lenana on Mount Kenya, using the Chogoria route, and didn't see a single other person on the trip. We circumnavigated the peaks clockwise, and this gave a wonderfully varied trip. We climbed Kilimanjaro via the main Marangu Gate route, and if I did it again I would try a less frequented approach.

These photos have been scanned from transparencies, and so are not of the highest quality, but I hope they give some idea of this beautiful trip.

THE YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS WALK : The Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk is a very demanding but rewarding walk, which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres - 2,276 feet), Whernside (736 metres - 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723 metres 2,372 feet) all in one circular route. There is no set starting point, but the vast majority of walkers start at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, taking in the summits in the order shown above. The walk is approximately 25 miles long with 5,200' feet of ascent, but this varies depending on route choice.

I have done the Three Peaks 3 times before, including "running" it with a friend about 20 years ago, but these photos were all taken on 13.7.08 when I did it with my friend Steve and his Dad Graham. The photos are intended as a record of the walk, and I make no claim for their artistic merit. For the most part I used the D50 as a simple point and shoot camera, but towards the end of the day I did try to be a little bit more creative.

To be honest this is not a walk I would recommend to others. There are much better walks of similar length, and far more spectacular mountains. But this walk has a reputation that attracts thousands of people every year to raise huge amounts of money for charity. This has to be a good thing, but the environmental impact of so many feet is putting a huge strain on the landscape.

Steve's gallery of photos from this walk are here; http://lincolnsteve.smugmug.com/gallery/5410240_k6fx3#330896482_PdEPc

CANADA : These photos were taken on a trip to Canada back in 1998. We were actually there for the World Masters Orienteering Championships, which were being held in various locations across Alberta. At this point I have to say that you only need to be 35 years old and over to take part in these Champs, and I was 41 at the time. The orienteering started near a small town called Smokey Lake, then moved on to the edge of the Rockies near Canmore. After the competition was over we spent a week exploring the Rockies, but it was all over far too quickly.

These photos were all taken as transparencies, and are the only ones that I've had time to scan in up to now, there will be more :)

I've got some similar views in other galleries, but the light was so good I thought that these deserve their own gallery. The last two images were actually taken at The Lawns, just over the road from the Castle.

NETTLEHAM VILLAGE : Nettleham is a village 3 miles north-east of Lincoln, UK. There have been settlements here since the bronze age, and the name literally means "place of nettles". There are now several sprawling new housing estates in the village, but the old centre around the church and beck is still very beautiful.

BURTON VILLAGE : Burton is an ancient village 2 miles north of Lincoln, with a history going back to Roman times when a an unknown Roman built his villa on the limestone escarpment looking to the west across the Trent valley. It was well established in 1086 when the lands in “Burtone” were recorded in the Domesday book. The ridge and furrow ploughing on the Lincoln edge and earthworks in the surrounding fields indicate the village was a thriving community in medieval times. For 350 hundred years from 1600, the village was dominated by the Monson family who established their family seat in Burton and built the Hall on the site of an old Tudor mansion. Until 1950 it was an estate village with its life and its inhabitants tied to the fortunes of the Hall and the estates.

The Monson connection was severed in 1951 when the hall and much of the village was sold. Since that time the attractive nature of Burton and its proximity to Lincoln have resulted in the building of several new houses, to give the intermix of new and old that is the village today. In 1969 the village with the surrounding parkland was designated as a Conservation Area.

RISEHOLME HALL : Two miles north of Lincoln, Riseholme has had a place in history for hundreds of years. There are signs of Roman and early English settlements and the remains of a medieval village, parts of which have been excavated. Some of the earliest records of the parish are in the Doomsday Book 1086AD, which mentions three Saxon owners. It is now an agricultural college and part of the University of Lincoln.

NEWARK-on-TRENT : Newark is a small market town in Nottinghamshire, about 15 miles SW of Lincoln. It lies on the River Trent, the third longest in England, and is important as a station on the main East coast railway from London to Scotland. It's castle is famous as the place where King John died, he of Magna Carta and Robin Hood notoriety. It has a large market square, surrounded by fine Georgian buildings, and many narrow winding streets leading off it.

These photos were all taken on Sunday March 1st 2009. It started off as a grey day, but brightened up during the afternoon. So if the photos don't look appealing at first please stick with them, things do improve :)

As always the gallery is best appreciated by using the slideshow feature, so take your time and have a leisurely stroll round Newark.
