DAILY PHOTOS THIRD YEAR : I am continuing this Daily Project into a third year as best I can. It is my intention to shoot and post every day when possible, but please forgive me if I have to raid the archives or even miss the odd day here and there. Some days might be just quick snapshots, others may have some pretensions towards art. I intend to try new things, exploring new areas and pushing my photographic comfort zone ever further. Constructive criticism is always welcome of course, and I will try to reciprocate when time allows. As usual I will enable Google Earth, so that if you click on the "map this" feature above the image you can see where the photographs were taken.

DAILY PHOTOS SECOND YEAR : My second year on the Dailies started on 1.2.09, if it is half as much fun as the first year then it will be worth doing. I will always try to take a photo every day, but there will be times when that isn't possible, so I might have to take the odd trip into the archives. DAILY PHOTOS FIRST YEAR : This gallery is now a complete year of Daily photos, and although it has felt like a chore on some days I have to say that it has been great fun most of the time. When I started my intention was to challenge myself to try new things, especially to get out of my landscape comfort zone and make myself a more rounded photographer. I've certainly tried lots of new things, had a few disasters, some near misses, and lots of pleasant surprises. But the biggest pleasure is always reading other people's comments and checking out their galleries. There are so many talented people on here that it beggars belief. I really appreciate any comments, especially the constructive ones. I am now moving on to a new gallery for my second year.........

WATERCOLOURS : In the past I always saw post processing as a tool to use to make a photo more "real", to overcome the shortcomings of the camera and the photographer. But recently I've started to appreciate that there is much more to be achieved. The effect that I've used on these images isn't a photoshop preset, it is a manipulation of levels that I have invented/discovered myself. I hope that you like these images as much as I do. I know that some work better than others, and they all work better as bigger images. All of these images are of my hometown Lincoln, in the UK, or the surrounding countryside. I am happy to share the effect with anyone that is interested, but I will share it with individuals via email rather than describing it here.

SNOWY EASTER SUNDAY : Recent UK winters have been wet and mild, with no real snow fall for years in Lincoln. So when "heavy" snow was forecast for today (23.3.08), many of us were sceptical as to how much we'd actually get. It was a pleasant surprise to wake up to about 2-3 inches, although we knew it wasn't going to last long. So, warm clothes on, camera gear in rucsac, then a 2 mile walk up to the Cathedral area of the City. I would have driven, but some clown parked right across my drive overnight! This proved to be a good thing in the end though. The photos are arranged in the order that I took them, so you can follow my walk, see the weather change and watch as people gradually come out to play. As I add the captions to this gallery it is early evening, and the snow has almost gone, but it was great while it lasted.

"ANTIQUE" POSTCARDS : Some subjects lend themselves to an "antique postcard" treatment, and I like creating them, so this is where I put them. For the technically minded, I almost always increase the contrast of the image and apply an unsharp mask after converting to black and white. I find that this lifts the image and increases definition. I then apply a sepia photo filter of 80%, and the framing is a template in Photoshop Elements.

INDUSTRIAL DERELICTION - A SLIDE SHOW : This gallery is intended to be viewed as a slide show, not as individual photographs. It is a series of images taken in an abandoned factory near my home, with each image presented in 3 different ways. The first is the original form. The second is black and white, possibly the traditional way to showcase scenes of industrial dereliction? But black and white too often signifies death and destruction to me. This building may not be a thriving, bustling hive of activity anymore, but until the day it is demolished it remains a living, breathing feature of the landscape. The third treatment is one that I have previously reserved for pastoral scenes, or beautiful old historic buildings. While I was in this factory I realised that it has many similar features to a beautiful cathedral, although not immediately as aesthetically pleasing perhaps. The light, flooding in through a semi-glass roof, was superb. It could almost have been a photographic studio. The architecture, the shapes, lines, textures and details, was far more than I originally saw when I walked in the door. This was the workplace for dozens, possible even hundreds, of people at one time. Now it is the secret haunt of kids playing with their imagination and of graffitti artists. On reflection, while I was processing the images I realised that I had approached them as landscapes, and forgotten to take any close-up shots or individual details. Since my first visit they have started to dismantle the factory. I've added a few shots of the demolition work, and hope to continue this gallery as the site is cleared, and eventually re-developed. I hope this works as I have intended. Please leave your comments and feedback, and thank-you for taking the time to look at these images.

INDUSTRY BY NIGHT : I set out one evening to take some shots of an oil refinery at night, and found it far more difficult than I had imagined. These shots were taken at a nearby chemical factory. I had problems with flares and noise that I just didn't foresee, and I need to re-visit the whole subject and improve on these. I've started this gallery so that I can monitor my progress (hopefully!)

FAUX PLANETS : How much more power does a photographer want than to be able to create their own planets? I don't know who first worked out how to do this, but I first saw Faux Planets in Amy Wilburn's galleries and she told me to have a go myself :) It has taken several weeks to actually sit down and try, but once I got the principles I went a bit mad I'm afraid. It is great fun, but I really should spend more time fine tuning the images, especially hiding the seams. I've got a better idea now of what images translate into great planets, so hopefully I'll improve with practice.... hopefully! 13 MINUTES ON "THE BAIL" : The images in this gallery were all taken within a 13 minute period, during the afternoon of 27.8.08, on Bailgate in Lincoln, UK. One of the oldest streets in the City, Bailgate was once at the heart of the Roman town of Lindum Colonia, and the Roman Newport Arch still lies at it's northern end. I have used my "watercolour" post processing effect to create a common thread running through the images, it also helps to brighten up what was a very grey August afternoon. I do not claim any great artistic merit with this gallery, it is simply a record of 13 minutes on one road, with people going about their business, whether as locals or tourists. If anyone would like to know how the "watercolour" processing works please email me. It isn't a secret, and I love sharing it, but it is so much more fun to do it individually :)

The images are best seen in slideshow, and comprise of three variations of each photo. The first is the original photo, followed by my "watercolour" version and a black and white conversion on top of the watercolour. For details of the images themselves, or the treatment, please email me and I will be happy to share. This is a new gallery and as such is a work in progress. WET DECEMBER AFTERNOON SHOPPING : The temperature is barely above freezing, the rain is horizontal, but hey, Christmas is coming, it's Saturday, let's go shopping :) When I went out to take these shots it was in desperation to get something for the Daily Gallery, but in the end I enjoyed myself. It was ridiculously dark, everything here was hand held at slower than 1/20th, and I had a job keeping the camera dry. I have used my "watercolour" effect to lift the images, as they were very dark and flat in camera. But the result, for better or worse, is a record of life in the run up to Christmas on a very wet and cold afternoon in Lincoln.

LINCOLN PHOTO WALK 30.7.09 : All the photos in this gallery were taken over about 90 minutes on the evening of July 30th 2009, in the Cathedral area of Lincoln, UK. Many of these views can be found in my other galleries, but I believe that 2 images are rarely the same, there are too many variables. The light on this particular evening was perfect, the air was clear after days of rain, and there were just enough people to let us play around with slower shutter speeds and movement.

LINCOLN PHOTO WALK 14.10.09 : These photos were taken along the River Witham in the centre of Lincoln, and along the South edge of Brayford Pool to the University campus. The first four photos were taken in the afternoon before the actual walk. It is nice to contrast the old industrial buildings of Stamp End, with the Gothic Cathedral on the hill and the ultra-modern University.

The viewpoint was the multi-storey car park overlooking the High Street level crossing on one side, and Wigford Way on the other. LINCOLN SAUSAGE FESTIVAL : The Lincoln Sausage Festival took place in the Castle and Castle Square on Halloween 2009. You won't see an actual sausage in this gallery, because the Festival was much more than that. It was a showcase of all sorts of wonderful farm produce, from venison to fudge, honey to wild boar sausage, and smoked fish to chilli jam! This gallery is more about the people and places, and the wonderful late afternoon light that bathed the Castle walls and adjacent Cathedral.

INSPIRATION : This is a gallery for images that I hope will be a little bit different. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS : I'm going to add to this gallery over the Christmas 2009 period. The first photos were taken at dusk on November 23rd, on The Bail and the upper reaches of Steep Hill. The second set were taken on November 24th, of the torchlight procession in aid of St. Barbabas Hospice, through Newport Arch and down The Bail to the Cathedral. The third series were taken in the centre of town during the early evening of November 25th, with a few on the lower part of Steep Hill.. Four photos were then taken at dusk around the High Street/Guildhall Street area.................... and on December 9th I got some photos of the temporary ice rink in City Square. December 11th was foggy, which added another dimension to the lights around the cathedral. The final 11 were taken at dusk on New Years Eve.

COLD DECEMBER DAY : December 19th '09 was the coldest day of the winter so far in the UK. Much of the Country woke up to snow, but Lincoln only had a dusting. We did however have a lot of icy roads. I was having car troubles so had to walk into town. I took these shots on my way there and back, stopping off at a Farmers Market in Castle Square.

GHOSTS IN THE SNOW : These shots were taken on the evening of January 5th 2010 around the Historic Quarter of Lincoln, UK, after fresh snowfall. The subject matter will be familiar to regular visitors to my galleries, but snow is rare in these parts and it adds an extra magic to the scenes. I've never seen the East Lawn of the Cathedral so busy with families making snowmen, and generally having fun despite the cold.
